Ever wish you could stop hair loss, volumize your hair or even regrow thinning patches? You can, thanks to these pampering natural remedies that give you thicker, fuller and stronger hair. Hair loss happens to many of us, especially as we get older—but it doesn’t have to mean the end of gorgeous locks. Here’s how to get yours back on track.
Stop Hair Loss: 5 Natural Fixes
Eliminate buildup with a sugar scalp scrub. Flakes and product buildup are more than just annoying—they can clog follicles and block your scalp’s ability to grow lush, thick hair. Luckily, a weekly scalp scrub gets hair back on track fast! “Brown sugar exfoliates dead skin cells, while baking soda removes residue left from styling products,” explains Janice Cox, author of Natural Beauty at Home. DIY it: Mix 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 Tbs. baking soda and 2 drops peppermint essential oil ($10, Amazon.com.) In shower, add a teaspoon of scrub into a dollop of shampoo. Massage into scalp for 1-3 minutes using small, circular motions. Rinse well; condition as usual.
Add instant fullness with loose waves. “Adding texture with loose waves creates instant volume and movement while giving the appearance of thicker hair,” reveals Jamie Suarez, creative director of Regis Corporation. The best part? It looks amazing on all hair types and lengths! Try it: Tilt head upside down and blow dry damp hair against its natural direction to prevent it from laying at on your scalp. Curl hair with 1″ curling iron, clipping each curl against your scalp as it cools to hold the texture longer for volume that lasts all day!
Snack your way to healthier hair. This breakfast bowl starts with oats, which are rich in zinc and iron to encourage healthy hair growth. Milk adds protein—the building blocks of hair follicles—while the omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts and the ellagic acid in strawberries keep hair looking full. Try it: Boil 8 oz. water in saucepan. Reduce heat to medium, then stir in 1/2 cup rolled oats. Cook 5 minutes. Transfer to bowl; top with 1/2 cup sliced strawberries, 1 Tbs. chopped walnuts, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon and 2-4 oz. milk.
Massage your way to stronger hair. “A spa-inspired scalp massage boosts blood flow and circulation to your follicles,” says Cox. The result? Stronger hair! In fact, Japanese research shows that a four-minute daily scalp massage powers cells at the base of the follicles to grow hair that is thicker and stronger. Try it: Beginning at top center of your head, use pads of fingers to apply firm pressure and massage scalp in circular motions over crown and down toward base of neck for 2 minutes. Then massage from temples toward back of head for 2 minutes. Repeat daily, and you’ll start seeing thicker hair in about six to eight weeks.
Trigger new hair growth with a rosemary spritz. Thanks to its unique ability to stimulate circulation, keeping hair follicles healthy, rosemary is known as an all-natural powerhouse when it comes to revving hair growth. In fact, a six-month study found applying the herb to your scalp improved hair growth as effectively as 2 percent minoxidil! DIY it: Simmer 1 Tbs. dried rosemary and 1 cup water in saucepan for 10 minutes. Remove from heat; steep until cool. Strain mixture into spritz bottle. Mist lightly over scalp daily, then use fingertips to massage in. Keeps 1 week, refrigerated.
