Why You’re Never Too Old for Beauty School

As we grow older, it’s easy to tell ourselves we’ve missed out on certain chances when it comes to things like our careers. After all, most of us are told to decide our paths while still in our teens. It’s completely understandable that we might change our mind later in life, yet feel pressured to stay on that original path we chose. However, that is absolutely not something you should let hold you back if you’re looking for a fresh start. For example, many women wish they’d gone to beauty school earlier in life and feel like they can’t give it a try once they’ve reached their 40s or 50s — but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

When a woman reached out to the beauty experts at Behind the Chair questioning that exact mindset, the website sought out answers from their community of salon pros. The overwhelming majority came back with one simple answer: You are never too old to go to beauty school! As long as it’s something you’re passionate about, there’s no reason you can’t dive into the world of hair and beauty at any age. A few extra candles on your birthday cake doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck in a rut.

One woman even claimed the age difference gave her a boost when she enrolled in beauty school. “I think I actually had an advantage over the younger girls,” Ginger Lynn Close told Behind the Chair. “I had life experience and I took my education seriously. I was spending my money on education and I wasn’t going to waste a minute of it.” She also admitted that it wasn’t a walk in the park once you have the degree, though. Still, although building up your own string of clients and staying on top of new trends can be daunting, she confirmed it was totally worth it.

Other stylists who chimed in warned that going to beauty school can be potentially taxing on your body and your wallet. You’ll need to consider how you feel about investing in the tools and supplies to get started, and whether you’re up for a job that requires standing all day long. If those aren’t issues for you, though, then there’s nothing holding you back from getting a fresh start on life with a fun new career path!
