When you think of cold and flu prevention, images of vitamin D, herbal tea, or face masks might come to mind. Thanks to modern innovation, however, there’s a new way to stay healthy that's far more fashionable. Meet BioScarf (From $23.99), a first-of-its-kind accessory that will not only keep you warm and give your outfit an added touch of flair, but help you stay healthy all season by protecting you against colds and the flu.
This wonder scarf is made with a particulate filter that can block your face from smoke, smog, PM 2.5 (tiny pollutant particles that can make the air hazy), pneumonia, strep, influenza, tuberculosis, pet dander, dust, pollen, and other pollutants. It was found to filter an average of 99.75 percent of all airborne particulates of size 0.1 microns (one millionth of a meter) and larger by the FDA. In fact, it outperformed many air pollution and allergy masks specifically designed for the purpose.
The idea for the award-winning design was born when co-founder Carlton Solle was discussing lack of attractive options for hygienic face covers with his spouse. “I was looking for a way to protect myself without having to wear one of those masks, I mentioned it to my wife, she came up with the idea and brought it to life,” he said in a press release.
As if its award-winning technology wasn’t impressive enough, this scarf is also eco-friendly, with a lining that's made from 100 percent recycled PET water bottles and labels that are made out of recycled PVC. The company also donates scarves to those at risk for air pollutants around the world through its Bioscarf Plus One Program.
"Experts say that over two billion kids around the world are breathing toxic air and nobody is talking about it,” BioScarf co-founder Hazel Solle said in a press release. "It’s time to not only raise awareness about this issue, but to more importantly give many of the people at risk who don’t have the means to protect themselves something to help them combat air pollution on a daily basis.”
The above pictured BioGaiter, which extends from your neck to the middle of your face (much like an infinity scarf), is one size fits all and can be worn in a variety of ways. It also comes in a traditional lariat scarf style ($28.99, below) in four different colors. Both styles can be placed over the mouth and nose to keep airbourne toxins at bay.
Amazon customers also love it for traveling: “I … wear this product on international flights,” one buyer wrote. “I was able not only to breathe well … I was able to get some better sleep and able to function without jet lag. I will recommend it to anyone traveling and or taking a flight.”
Added another: “Wore this during recent travels, [it] helped me avoid getting sick from all the other people coughing and sneezing around me.”
BioScarf also warms just like a traditional neck warmer. “I love this BioScarf. It keeps me warm out here on the East Coast,” wrote a happy purchaser. “It's been just above freezing at night where I live and [it] filters out the car and bus exhaust at the same time. I may not notice the exhaust in the summer as much, but when it is cold out, the exhaust seems to hit my lungs even harder.”
It's official: We may never wear another scarf again.
