Bullied Boy Saves Cat With Same Eye Condition and Cleft Lip
Madden Humphreys isn’t your ordinary seven-year-old. Madden is a special boy from Oklahoma with a rare condition called heterochromia iridum, which has caused his eyes to appear two beautiful colors: A brilliant shade of blue (the left eye) and a vibrant shade of green (the right eye). He also has a cleft lip, which — combined with the heterochromia iridum — is exceptionally rare and gives him a unique appearance. Sadly, Madden’s differences have stood out at school, prompting other kids to bully him and poke fun at his one-of-a-kind features.
In hopes of helping Madden feel more comfortable, his mom, Christina, helped him create an anti-bullying video in which he explains his extraordinary qualities to the world. It immediately went viral, garnering more than 3,000 shares and plenty of supportive comments.
The positive feedback gave Madden a boost, but Christina still thought her son needed more help getting back to his “spunky” self, so she decided it was time to adopt a pet. But not just any pet; Christina was determined to adopt an animal who was just as unique as her son and who could help make sweet Madden feel safe and comfortable. Then, a miracle happened: a friend of Christina’s posted an image of a cat in her “cleft moms” Facebook group who also had one blue eye, one green eye, and a cleft lip, just like Madden.
“Last week, a friend posted an image of the cat in our cleft moms group,” Christina wrote in a post for the blogging site Love What Matters. “This kitty was taken in by a rescue group in Minnesota. We knew immediately that this kitty was meant to be part of our family. Not only does he have a cleft lip like our 7-year-old son Madden, he also has complete heterochromia iridum, like Madden. They were destined to be best friends. Funny how a pet can make you feel less alone.”
Luckily, Christina had the support of her friends to help fund the road trip from Oklahoma to Minnesota to pick up the cat. Even so, we bet Christina would have gone to the end of the world to save this special kitten for Madden.
“Moon, the kitty, and Madden are the perfect companions for each other,” she wrote. “In a word full of bullies and hateful words, we will choose to chase love. I think it’s safe to say that this kitty is love, and was certainly meant to be part of our journey and Madden’s journey.”
“Everyone needs a friend, and everyone needs to feel understood,” Christina continued. “I’m so thankful Madden has Moon. Not only so that both he and the kitty have a relatable and sweet companion, but also, I hope Moon helps Madden realize that being born unique in an incredible thing; that he is magic. These two handsome guys truly are a wonder.”
We’re so happy Madden has found a forever friend who shares his same physical qualities. We hope the Madden and Moon will share a loving and long-lasting friendship — and that they help set an example of what it means to be kind and accepting of others, no matter their differences.
