Brooke Shields Has Mastered the Tricky Art of Christmas Shopping for Picky Teens

Brooke Shields’ Christmas tip will come in handy this holiday season as parents everywhere struggle to buy gifts for their picky teens. Instead of expensive gifts under the tree, the mother of two has found a different way for her family to make lasting memories together.

At a recent event for the launch of Meiomi Sparkling Wine, the actress and model spoke about the difficulties of playing Santa to her two daughters, Rowan, 15, and Grier, 12. “Once [kids] hit 12 or 13, they start becoming very specific. What we’ve started doing is taking them each Christmas or New Year’s on an experience. We went to Ireland, we went to India. Granted, we’re lucky we can do that. But instead of just buying them things, which once you get past whatever sneaker everybody has that they want, you sort of whittle it down,” she said.

“At first kids balk at it, I think, because they want the latest crop top or whatever it is. There will be some of that, but when you take them out of their environment and you expose them to just being in a different environment and having an experience that’s so foreign to them, they really react beautifully. They communicate differently. We’ve noticed that once they’ve gotten older. That’s what we’ve been doing, because they’re not big on toys anymore.”

One place in particular where Shields and her family like to spend time is in Florida, where Shields’ stepmom lives. “Since my dad passed away, we started doing that, all rallying around my stepmom. It’s been years now, and [my kids] love it,” she told InStyle.

Of course, traveling often comes with a hefty price tag — something Shields is aware some families can’t afford. Fortunately, families don’t have to go far from home in order to make memories together. Crafting personalized gifts, like homemade caramel popcorn or Christmas cards, is something the whole family can enjoy.

Before you shell out for the newest gaming console for your kids, think about what they already have. Do your kids really need a new Xbox, or does last year’s edition still work? Memories you make as a family will last you longer than any video game.
