We all know award-winning actress Meryl Streep for her talent in front of the camera and Cher for being an iconic pop star and actress, but who knew that these two leading ladies were also superheroes behind the scenes? Turns out, there was actually once a time when together, they saved a woman from being attacked on the streets of New York City.
Cher spoke about the 1980s incident this week during an interview with James Corden, and recalled the shock and alarm that she and Streep felt at the time of witnessing the attack. "Meryl had just had (her daughter) Mamie, and we were downtown in her old apartment, and she said, 'I want some ice cream,' and I said, 'OK'. And so we walk out and the first thing we see is some guy hitting cars with a brick. And then we walk down the street and we hear screaming. And we come around the corner, and this gigantic man is ripping the clothes off of this girl."
Cher revealed that, almost instinctively, she and Streep decided to help the young woman and save her. "Meryl starts screaming, and I start screaming, and we run toward this gigantic man and he turns and starts running toward us. And just out of, I don’t know, we split and he ran through us. And so we went up to the girl, and all of her clothes were torn and she was clutching her bag," she explained.
"She goes, 'Oh my God! I was saved by Meryl Streep and Cher. I’m an actress, and I work in a café where we sing, and all my friends are going to be so jealous.'"
We're so glad that these two brave ladies were there to save the day.
