One thing we love about 'This Is Us' star Chrissy Metz is her level of confidence when opening up to fans about her ongoing journey to health in her professional and personal life. But as Metz has recently revealed, she wasn't always so confident at all.
Metz confessed in an exclusive interview with People.com that just a few years ago, she was battling depression.
"I’d be getting maybe two auditions a year, and I’d always see the same small group of girls," Metz said of her slow start to finding work in Hollywood.
She said she began "eating my feelings" and gained more than 100 pounds before she experienced a panic attack just short of her 30th birthday. Snapping back into reality, Metz was prepared to follow the doctor's orders to lose the weight.
"I was so gung ho, I lost 100 pounds in less than five months," she said. "All I did was eat a 2,000-calorie diet and walk 20 minutes a day."
As the pounds slipped away, her confidence slowly came back. And Metz landed a recurring part on American Horror Story: Freak Show, which would pave the way for her breakout role on This Is Us. Following in the steps of her character Kate, she will lose weight as part of her job--and her continuing journey to both physical and mental health.
"You have to use what you have, and I wouldn’t have this role if I had already lost weight," she says. "Now it’s about telling a story of a woman struggling with her weight, just as I have and still am."
What's the best part of the story? Metz isn't undergoing this weight loss journey for anyone but herself.
"I want to have a fit, healthy body and not have to be put in a box," she said. "I don’t want to be limited by anything."
We say hats off to her. You go, Chrissy!
