Deflated Mom Couldn’t Sell a Single Craft at the Fair, But Adoring Son Has None of It

Martyn Hett was devastated when he saw his mother Figen Murray’s stand at a craft fair. No one was buying anything that his hardworking mom put together. And Hett would know better than anyone just how much effort she put in.

“I remember when we were little she used to make all sorts,” Hett said. “She had a sewing machine and she used to make tote bags for us. She even made her own curtains for the house. My most prominent craft-related memory is of her hand-stitching a mouth on to my favorite teddy for me because I was sad that it didn’t have one.”

Murray has been crafting her whole life, sewing and knitting for therapeutic reasons. So understandably, she took it pretty personally when no one bought a single handmade thing of hers at the fair.

“She’s a counselor and she believes that being creative is good for the soul – it’s advice she often gives her clients,” Hett said. “She seemed a bit deflated and surprised there was so little interest, especially as it was handmade and she’d put a lot of work into it.”

Hett was determined to do something about it. So he shared the heartbreaking image on Twitter.

At first, he only got a few sympathetic responses. But then, he realized that Murray had her own online shop that sold her homemade items.

After he shared the discovery with his followers on Twitter, something truly astounding happened.

His mom went from selling zero things in her shop to nearly 40 items in a matter of just a few days. As it stands now, her list of items has nearly been sold out.

“She is overwhelmed by the reaction,” Hett said. “Very happy, very excited.”

Even more astounding, she was just about to give up on her lifelong work before this happened.

We’re so glad she didn’t!
