Confirmed: Nearly 90 percent of us deal with cellulite! Thankfully, there are a few easy lifestyle changes that can help. Read on for MD–recommended tricks that will erase those dimples and bumps.
Snack on blueberries
“Think of your skin like a pair of Spanx. Over time, it can weaken and stretch out, becoming unable to hold in the underlying fat — and this makes cellulite look more apparent,” explains Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in the department of dermatology at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital.
The all-natural Rx: Thickening skin from the inside out with 1⁄2 cup a day of fresh summer blueberries! A German study suggests that within six weeks, potent phytonutrients found in the fruit will have significantly improved skin’s elasticity.
An impressive 81 percent of women reduced their cellulite by pampering their skin daily with a topical caffeine infusion, according to a Canadian study. “Caffeine not only helps constrict blood vessels to eliminate excess fluid from the skin, it has been shown to directly break down fat itself,” explains Dr. Zeichner.
To do: Dab cooled white tea over affected areas or try a product such as The Ordinary Caffeine Solution ($6.70, Sephora). Amplify the effects by massaging it in. “A buildup of lymphatic fluid can cause fat under the skin to swell, worsening the appearance of cellulite,” says Zeichner. “But massage boosts drainage of excess fluid, minimizing the appearance of dimpling.”
Sip from a crystal glass
One surprising culprit behind cellulite: plastic cups! That’s because many plastics contain BPA, a chemical that mimics estrogen. “We know that the estrogen stimulates fat gland activity, which is why if you suffer from cellulite, it may be wise to stay away from phytoestrogens,” explains Zeichner. To sidestep estrogen-mimicking chemicals that plump fat cells, simply sip from your prettiest glass. — K.E. Kluznik
