Pet Groomer Saves Corgi’s Life by Performing Doggy CPR

Thanks to a pet groomer who knows dog CPR, one lucky pup is still wagging her tail today. It all started with a seemingly normal grooming session that quickly turned into an emergency at Belly Rubs Dog Grooming in Normal, Illinois.

Pia, a 15-year-old corgi rescue dog, was dropped off at the shop by her loving owner, Juliana Harms. As Harms told The Pantagraph, it was Pia’s first grooming session in a while because the canine had been having some problems with her liver. But Pia appeared to be doing well that particular day — or so Harms thought.

“Pia was laying on her side, which was weird,” said Kerry King, owner of the grooming shop. “We’re all used to how the dogs act and we knew something was wrong.”

It was then that the staff members realized that Pia had gone completely limp. The poor doggo wasn’t breathing and her heart had stopped. That’s when one groomer, Emily Bauman, stepped up with King to save Pia’s life.

How to Do CPR on Dogs

Luckily, Bauman, who is studying zoology at Illinois State University, knew exactly what to do.

“You give CPR to a dog just like you would to a human,” Bauman told The Pantagraph. “You do mouth-to-mouth by blowing air into their lungs through their nostrils. Then, you do chest compressions as you would a human to get that heart rate back.”

Slowly but surely, the pup finally started to respond to Bauman’s treatment. Pia began to breathe again and was even able to stand on her own feet as well.

Pia’s owner Harms quickly rushed her precious pet to the hospital afterward for an exam. Although it’s unclear what caused Pia’s health emergency, the grooming shop staff members believe she had a seizure. Either way, Harms says her corgi is now doing well and taking it easy at home — all thanks to a selfless, quick-thinking groomer. Even more impressive? It was the aspiring veterinarian’s first time ever trying dog CPR.

“I’ve seen CPR given many times at the animal hospital, but that was the first time I did it on an animal,” said Bauman. “It was really instinctual. I knew what to do. It was the right place at the right time.”

Though it’s beneficial for any pup owner to familiarize themselves with dog CPR, keep in mind that the most important thing is getting your sick pet to the hospital as soon as possible, as these canine lovers did. Because of their quick thinking, this story has a happy ending — and Harms couldn’t be more grateful.

“It was definitely a crisis, but Pia is home with me,” Harms said. “Pia is my heart.”
