This dog is the whole family's best friend! This week, a brave pup saved its human owners after getting a whiff of smoke in their home in Waterville, Maine.
Firefighters first received a call about a local house fire at 1 a.m., according to a press release from the Waterville Fire Department. Frighteningly enough, the canine's owners had been fast asleep in the living room — the same room that began to quickly fill with smoke from the rising flames.
Fortunately, the quick-thinking Wellington, a black, 8-year-old Airedale-poodle mix, woke up homeowners Michael Donihue and Susan MacKenzie as soon as those little nostrils caught wind of the scary scent. The heroic dog wasted no time in alerting the snoozing homeowners — and potentially saving their lives.
Unfortunately, they weren't able to put the fire out on their own, and the home sustained extensive fire damage to an outer wall and roof. There was also some light smoke damage to an inside wall. Due to all the damage left behind, firefighters aren't exactly sure what caused the fire or precisely where it started, but they think it had something to do with the proximity of the fireplace. In the meantime, the family will have to stay at a hotel until their house is repaired.
However, the most important thing is that everyone in the family was able to escape the flames without injury. And they have a furry member of the household to thank for that.
It just goes to show that sometimes, the nose knows best!
