Despite never appearing on screen herself in the new Netflix film Dumplin’, Dolly Parton’s inspirational spirit still shines in every scene. The film is based on a book of the same name and follows the story of a plus-size teen, Willowdean, who enters a beauty pageant in her small Texas town to get back at her beauty queen mom, played by Jennifer Aniston. Throughout the plot, Willowdean reminisces about her late aunt who introduced her to Dolly’s music and wisdom. The film is also filled with the classic hits we all love and a brand new tune by the country queen, “Girl in the Movies.”
But her amazing music isn’t the only thing Dolly decided to share with the rest of us while promoting the film — she also dished out her favorite recipe for chicken and dumplin’s! She posted the recipe, which you can see below in the second slide, and called it the perfect meal to whip up and enjoy while watching the film.
Like her mama’s recipe for banana pudding, Dolly sticks to a traditional method for this beloved southern kitchen staple. Using a Dutch oven, the recipe includes a 3-pound stewing hen, whole onion, and shortening. It does take a certain amount of skill to knead, roll, and sculpt the ideal dumplin’, but don’t get frustrated if yours are a little lumpy. After all, as Dolly says, “If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” It's also important to keep in mind that these dumplin’s will taste just as great no matter what they look like on the outside — which is another reason they make for such a great treat for the movie and its theme.
Warning for folks before watching the film, though: You might not cry while making the recipe without having to cut up the onion, but the characters will likely still cause more than a few (happy and sad) tears to fall.
