It's no secret that Dolly Parton absolutely adores children, even though she has no kids of her own. But when someone left a baby at the legendary singer's home, she responded in the only way she knew how: She took the abandoned infant under her caring wing until help arrived.
In a resurfaced interview with The Windy City Times back in 2011, the beloved icon recalled the wild story from her early years of fame. It only came to light after the interviewer asked Parton what the craziest thing was that a fan had ever asked of her.
The now 72-year-old responded, "It was when 'Jolene' was a big hit. We came home one day and there was a baby in a box at our gate with a note in it. The note said, 'My name is Jolene, my momma has left me here and she wants you to have me.' Of course, we all freaked out!"
She added, "We immediately called Human Services and took care of the baby until they got there."
Of course, it's wonderful to hear that Parton dropped everything to make sure the child remained safe and comfortable while she was in her care. But isn't it strange to imagine this happening to the star decades ago?
As the website Taste of Country notes, Parton's hit song "Jolene" was a No. 1 Billboard Hot Country single back in 1973. So if you do the math, that would make this baby Jolene about 45 years old or so today.
True to her caring nature, Parton admitted to The Windy City Times that she has often wondered about baby Jolene — and whether she has ever attended any of Parton's concerts. Considering the child's name was so closely linked to Parton's music, it wouldn't be so shocking if she turned out to be a devoted fan after all this time.
This story is just one more reason — out of millions — to love Dolly!
