99-Year-Old Daphne Dunne, Prince Harry’s No. 1 Fan, Is Laid to Rest

Friends and family of Daphne Dunne, Prince Harry’s number one fan, held a funeral service in Sydney, Australia, on April 16 to celebrate the life of the 99-year-old war widow. Dunne died on April 2 after a bout of pneumonia.

The service was held at St. Philip’s Anglican Church in the central business district, the same place where she married her first husband, Lieutenant Albert Chowne, a Victoria Cross recipient. Dunne’s daughter Michelle Haywood led the service with touching tributes to her late mother.

“My mom certainly was always just my mom, but somehow she became like a mom and a nanna to so many people,” Haywood said during her address.

Days before her tragic passing, Daphne had received a touching letter from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on her 99th birthday, congratulating her on reaching such an incredible milestone.

“Dear Daphne, my wife and I send our warmest wishes to you on the occasion of your 99th birthday on Friday,” the card read. “We hope you have a wonderful celebration surrounded by family and friends and that you’ve managed to escape hospital. Congratulations on reaching this important and impressive milestone before your centenary year next year. Happy Birthday Daphne. Best wishes, Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

During Harry and Meghan’s royal tour in Australia last year, the father-to-be got the chance to introduce his new bride to Daphne. The couple shared an adorable moment together, with the pair both crouching down to reach Daphne in her wheelchair.

“I wished them well with the baby on the way and said this is what Harry has been waiting for for so long… I got a cuddle too,” she said at the time.

Dunne’s family announced her passing earlier this month on Instagram, writing “She was a truly special lady who will be greatly missed by so many. The simple act of stopping Daphne in the street and holding her hand meant more to Daphne than anyone could ever imagine.”

“Much loved mother of Michelle, nanna of Katie and Charlie, aunt of Denise, Jenny, Robyn and Lynette, and friend to many including Meeko the dog,” her obituary read.

A public memorial service for Daphne will be held in St. James’ Church, King Street, Sydney, Australia, on May 17, 2019.
