Emeralds Were the Gemstone of Choice at the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes saw a significant number of actresses wearing black to show support for female victims of sexual abuse. Others added a “Time’s Up” pin to their ensemble as a meaningful accessory. Another subtle way of showing solidarity was the deliberate choice of gemstone favored by many attendees, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Debra Messing, Halle Berry, Zoe Kravitz, and Ashley Judd. They all offset their black gowns with dramatic green emerald earrings.

Emeralds are said to signify hope, renewal, and growth, so the stones were an appropriate choice for the first awards ceremony since the Harvey Weinstein scandal and ensuing aftermath.

Big Little Lies star Zoe Kravitz wore a Saint Laurent velvet dress with graphic pendant earrings designed by Lorraine Schwartz. Debra Messing showed off an emerald ring that matched her stud earrings. Catherine Zeta-Jones wore a chandelier-style pair of emerald earrings, and Seth Meyer’s pregnant wife, Alexi, donned bright green earrings accessorized with a simple black maternity dress.

References to gender equality extended to other aspects of some actresses looks. Emma Stone’s makeup artist Rachel Goodwin explained on her Instagram that the palette she had chosen was inspired by the women’s suffrage movement. She wrote, “Tonight my beauty inspiration came from the symbolic colors of the women’s suffrage movement. I wanted to create a make up that would somehow be imbued with the message of female empowerment and solidarity.’ Purple as everyone knows is the royal color. It stands for the royal blood that flows through the veins of every Suffragette, the instinct for freedom and dignity, white stands for purity in private and public life.. and green the color of hope.’ Emmiline Pethick-Lawrence 1908.”

It looks like emeralds are set to be big in 2018.
