Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Have Been Together 38 Years — Here’s Why They Never Got Married

"You’ve just got to want to be together."

Blonde bombshell Goldie Hawn, 75, and Hollywood hunk Kurt Russell, 69, have been in love for a whopping 38 years. The couple met on the set of 1984’s Swing Shift, and though they never married, they recently clued us in to what’s kept their relationship thriving all these years.

Speaking to People, the couple admits that there isn’t a big secret as to what’s kept them going strong. “You’ve just got to want to be together,” Hawn said in the interview. “I don’t think there’s any way other than do it.”

Since working alongside each other on the set of Swing Shift, the two only co-stared in one other film — 1987’s Overboard. Most recently, however, Hawn made a guest appearance as Mrs. Clause in Russell’s 2018 Netflix hit The Christmas Chronicles, as well as the sequel released this year. How cute!

And while their relationship has truly stood the test of time, many wonder why they haven’t ever tied the knot. “For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have,” Russell told People.

Despite never getting married, the two have built a beautiful and blended family. Together they share a son, actor Wyatt Russell, 34. They also have their children from previous marriages: Russell’s son Boston and Hawn’s kids, actors Kate, 41, and Oliver Hudson, 44.

And as it turns out, their children haven’t necessarily adopted the same mindsets about marriage. “Our children got married, Hawn explain. “I mean, they didn’t not get married. Oliver’s very happily married and Wyatt’s very happily married. Katie got married once and that didn’t work, and she’s with the most amazing human, and I don’t know if she’ll marry again. The point is that we all tried marriage and sometimes marriage doesn’t work.”

Regardless of what happens, Hawn and Russell are supportive of what ever their kids want to do in their relationships. “It’s okay. It’s not about the marriage. It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together,” Hawn says. “And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it. You’ve got to give things up, but the joy and the excitement of being together and touching the toes of somebody at night is really a nice feeling.” Isn’t that just the sweetest thought?

As they gear up for holiday celebrations, the couple, who have six grandkids together, express how grateful they are for the family and life that they’ve created. “That feeling of gratitude is important, because it’s good for your brain and your heart and your health,” Hawn says. “It’s a good thing to pass on.” We couldn’t agree more.
