Helena Bonham Carter Joins the Cast of the Hit Show ‘The Crown’

If we’re being truly honest, it’s Vanessa Kirby’s turn as rebellious Princess Margaret in The Crown that’s our favorite thing about the show. Yes, we love Matt Smith as a debonair Prince Phillip, and of course, Claire Foy is simply perfect as the queen, but it’s Kirby’s presence that really lights up the screen (remember that scene of her dancing alone to The Flamingos’ hit “I Only Have Eyes For You” in season two?).

Now, as time moves on and the cast gets ready for a switch-around in seasons three and four, it has finally been confirmed (months after extensive reports and very strong rumors first began to circulate) that Kirby’s replacement as the party-loving princess will be none other than Oscar nominee, period drama veteran, and all-round acting legend, Helena Bonham Carter.

“I’m not sure which I’m more terrified about — doing justice to the real Princess Margaret or following in the shoes of Vanessa Kirby,” the actress said in a statement released on the show’s official Twitter account, joking that “the only thing I can guarantee is that I’ll be shorter than Vanessa.”

Earlier this year, Kirby fueled the fire by posting an image of herself and Bonham Carter on her Instagram account, with a caption that simply reads, “Honoured @thecrownnetflix,” a move which many took to confirm her replacement.

Since then, it’s been revealed that Tobias Menzies will take over from Matt Smith as Prince Philip. Paul Bettany was previously linked to the role, but was unable to commit to the extensive shoot for seasons three and four due to scheduling conflicts. Menzies will join Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, and W1A‘s Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

So far, we know that season three will include Princess Margaret’s divorce from new husband Antony Armstrong-Jones, AKA Lord Snowdon, as it has been confirmed by Robert Lacey, the show’s historian. Spanning the decade between 1964 and 1974, we can also expect to see Margaret’s favorite holiday home in Mustique, site of her legendary parties, crop up, as well as her mingling with London’s Swinging Sixties set. It’s also widely assumed that the third season will introduce Lady Diana Spencer and Camilla Parker-Bowles.

Bonham Carter is an interesting choice for the role, best known for playing darker, stranger characters, including Harry Potter villain Bellatrix Lestrange, as well as being a muse (and ex-wife) of Tim Burton. She does, however, have form when it comes to taking on royal roles, having previously played the Queen Mother opposite Colin Firth in The King’s Speech. No doubt the Oscar-winning actress will pull it off with aplomb. Needless to say, we can’t wait.
