Have You Noticed That Kate Middleton Never Wears Orange?

Tags:

Kate Middleton isn’t afraid to follow in Queen Elizabeth’s colorful footsteps when it comes to getting dressed, but there’s one hue in the rainbow that she’s never been photographed wearing before: orange. So what’s the reason behind the Duchess of Cambridge’s aversion to tangerine-colored clothes? We’ve done a little digging, looking back at whether other royals have the same distaste, and some interesting trends have emerged.

Plenty of royals have been photographed wearing orange, including Queen Elizabeth, Princess Anne, and Princess Diana. So it doesn’t seem like the hue is against royal protocol

The most likely explanation for why we’ve never seen Kate Middleton don pumpkin-colored anything is that she simply doesn’t think the color suits her. That said, she looks simply stunning in other citrus ensembles, so we’re sure she could pull off orange.

The closest we’ve seen Kate Middleton come to wearing orange is when she donned a peach-colored coat and dress back in 2013 while she was pregnant with Prince George. Since then, she wore a blood orange outerwear in 2018, but the shade was closer to red than true orange.

Another explanation is that Kate’s reluctance to wear orange is due to not wanting to appear political. A hop, skip, and jump away from the United Kingdom is the Netherlands, where the House of Orange-Nassau rules. Some speculate that Kate refrains from wearing their official color so as to not step on any toes.

This next hypothesis will take a bit of explaining. For decades, a faction within Northern Ireland has argued that the area should not remain within the United Kingdom. However, there is a pro-UK group within Northern Ireland called the Orangemen (the color orange is a symbol of the region’s Protestant groups). The royal family is not allowed to take sides in political matters, so it would make sense that Kate wouldn’t allow orange fabrics in her wardrobe so as to not appear biased. That said, Queen Elizabeth’s carrot-colored clothes weaken those arguments.

No matter the reason for Kate’s refusal to wear orange, she still manages to always step out in something scintillating. And if she ever decides to wear the hue, we know she’ll pull it off with ease.
