Big baby news! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting their first child together, according to a statement from Kensington Palace. The newest baby should join the royal family in the spring of 2019.
Harry revealed he’s hoping for a girl.
Aww, Prince Harry with a Daddy’s girl?! We can already picture it — and apparently so can he. The Duke of Sussex candidly let it slip this weekend that’s he’s hoping the baby that he and wife Meghan Markle are expecting turns out to be a daughter.
Busy parents-to-be Harry and Meghan are still traveling through Australia on their first joint royal tour, though the palace confirmed late Saturday that the expectant Duchess of Sussex will be cutting back on her schedule. That meant that on Sunday, Harry arrived solo to an Invictus Games cycling competition, where a female fan called out to him as he walked on the side of the cycling path, saying, “I hope it’s a girl!”
“So do I,” Harry immediately answers — and the whole thing was caught on video by another fan, who posted the clip on Instagram (where it has since gone viral).
How sweet! The excited dad-to-be may have just been joking along with the fan in the moment, or he may have revealed his true hope for his future baby’s gender. Either way, we’re sure Harry will make a wonderful father — and we know he’ll love this new royal baby to pieces, boy or girl. His excitement is contagious!
Will Meghan and Harry’s baby be a US citizen?
Back in November 2017, the palace announced that Meghan planned on becoming a citizen of the United Kingdom. There hasn’t been any more news on this topic, so it’s safe to assume that Meghan remains a US citizen.
So, what does that mean for her baby? According to the US Travel Department, a baby born in wedlock to a US citizen and an non-citizen is eligible for US citizenship if the American parent has lived in the states for a requisite amount of time. In this case, that time period must be five years prior to the child’s birth; at least two of those years have to have been after the American parent was 14 years old.
There’s been no word on whether Meghan will renounce her US citizenship once she becomes a UK citizen, but if she chooses to remain a citizen of the US, her baby will be eligible for US citizenship, too.
The Big Reveal
Of course, this citizenship speculation comes on the heels of the big announcement earlier this week. “Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” the statement from the palace read. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

The announcement was delivered five months after Prince Harry, 34, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, and Meghan, 37, an American actress, were married at Windsor Castle in England.
As the news broke, the pair had just touched down in Sydney, Australia, for their first overseas tour as husband and wife. Their visit to Australia coincides with the third Invictus Games, an international sports competition for members of the military that Harry founded in 2014. Most of their two-week tour will be spent in Australia, but they’ll also visit New Zealand, Tonga, and Fiji during their two-week tour.
Meghan and Harry had both previously spoken openly about wanting to start a family.
“Hopefully we’ll start a family in the near future,” Harry said at the time of the couple’s engagement interview, while Meghan once said motherhood was on her “bucket list.”
According to some reports, Meghan and Harry shared the big baby news with a few family members at the October 12 wedding of Princess Eugenie, Harry’s cousin. At the wedding, Meghan wore a stunning navy dress by Givenchy and sparked pregnancy rumors by leaving her navy topcoat unbuttoned round her middle.
Meghan and Harry’s baby will be the eighth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and the fourth grandchild of Harry’s father, Prince Charles.
