The Postal Service Is Releasing a ‘Mister Rogers’ Forever Stamp and It’s Such a Good Feeling

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood — and, soon, in your mailbox! Next month, the U.S. Postal Service plans to issue a stamp featuring the iconic children’s television character Mister Rogers.

The stamp is a photo of the beloved Mister Rogers wearing his trademark red zip-up sweater and smiling next to his puppet King Friday. The Forever stamp will be unveiled on March 23 — exactly 50 years to the day since the first episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood aired — at the Fred Rogers studio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Can’t make it to Pittsburgh for the unveiling in person? The ceremony will also be streamed live at 11 a.m. on facebook.com/USPS.

The U.S. Postal Service receives a whopping 40,000 stamp design suggestions every year, according to a spokesperson. And, as we’re sure you can imagine, narrowing down the options takes time — three years, to be exact! Knowing that makes us even happier that the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee decided to honor Mister Rogers on *the 50th anniversary of the start of the iconic children’s show.

Fred Rogers: America’s Favorite Neighbor

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood made its debut in 1968. The show gave children all over the nation someone to go to for heartfelt advice, afternoon stories, and catchy songs. Fred Rogers and his supporting cast of puppets and guest stars built up quite a fan base in the show’s 33-year run.

Mister Rogers wasn’t just an upstanding neighbor and character on television. He was actually like that in real life! In addition to winning four daytime Emmys between 1979 and 1999, Fred Rogers received numerous awards for public service, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1997.

Featuring jingles like “It’s Such a Good Feeling” and “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood clearly captivated children for more than three decades for good reason. Mister Rogers taught thousands of viewers to love and, appreciate, and respect each other, which is why we’re so excited to hear Tom Hanks will be playing Mister Rogers in upcoming biopic You Are My Friend.

We’re glad Fred Rogers is still on the minds and in the hearts of so many today, more than a decade after his death. Because, just like Mister Rogers always said at the end of his show, Mister Rogers, we like you just the way you are!
