Prince Charles’ 70th Birthday Party Will Be Missing an Important Pair of Royals: Harry and Meghan

Celebrating your 70th birthday is always a big deal, but that’s especially true if you happen to be the heir to a throne, like Prince Charles. Although his actual birthday isn’t until November 14, the Windsors will be kicking things off on October 22 with a star-studded celebration titled We Are Most Amused And Amazed, hosted by the Prince’s Trust at the London Palladium. According to the official description, the event will “[bring] together household names and legends of the industry” and “promises to be a night of unrivalled entertainment not to be missed.”

The Prince’s Trust is a charity founded by Charles in 1976. It aims to help individuals between the ages of 11 and 30 get their lives on the right track. According to their website, “Last year we empowered over 58,000 young people to turn their lives around.” Funds raised by Prince Charles’ birthday event will go to helping the charity continue their endeavors.

Unfortunately, two members of the family won’t be joining in on all the fun: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The newlyweds are currently enjoying life “down under” as they continue their tour of Australia, Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga, and New Zealand. They will be on the road making appearances until the end of October — but don’t worry, they’ve already taken time to celebrate with Charles long before heading to the Southern Hemisphere. Harry and Meghan were both present at the Prince of Wales’ Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on May 22, just a few days after their beautiful wedding.

You might think it’s odd that Charles is doubling up on festivities, but he’s really just following in his mom’s royal footsteps. Queen Elizabeth celebrates her actual birthday on April 21 and her “official” birthday, usually on the second Saturday of June.

Prince Charles hosted a similar shindig a decade ago for his 60th birthday, that time only titled We Are Most Amused. Comedian and Mr. Bean actor Rowan Atkinson made a particularly memorable appearance as a vicar in a sketch with a humorous twist on the “turning water into wine” miracle from the Bible, adding silly details like, “the crowd went absolutely bananas.” Although Meghan and Harry might be upset to miss out on the entertainment, they will at least be back in time to celebrate Charles’ actual birthday in November.
