Prince Charles’ Security Jumped Into Action After Fan Broke Royal Protocol

Prince Charles found himself at the center of a rather awkward encounter. During a visit to Durham, England, on Thursday, February 15, the 69-year-old royal received a hug from an excited fan as he was chatting with well-wishers.

Helen Bell unexpectedly wrapped her arms around the prince, which prompted his security team to spring into action. The prince, however, seemed relatively unfazed by the show of affection. Speaking about the moment to ITV, a TV network in the United Kingdom, Helen described the surprise hug as “wonderful.”

When asked why she decided to hug him, she said, “I don’t know, I’ve watched him on [TV], and I felt overwhelmed… He was alright, yeah. I won’t forget that moment.” Helen also revealed her conversation with Charles. “He said: ‘Are you all right?’ and I said, ‘Yes.'”

It’s a busy time of year for Charles, who is no doubt eagerly awaiting the wedding of his son Prince Harry and fiancée, Meghan Markle. The wedding of the year is just months away and recently, Kensington Palace released new details about the big day. According to the palace’s statement, the proceedings will begin at noon GMT on Saturday, May 19.

The ceremony at St. George’s Chapel will last an hour. At 1 PM, Prince Harry and Meghan will make their debut as husband and wife on a horse-drawn carriage, which will work its way around the town center so well-wishers can catch a glimpse of the newlyweds. It will no doubt remind fans of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

“They hope this short journey will provide an opportunity for more people to come together around Windsor and to enjoy the atmosphere of this special day,” the statement said. Following the carriage procession, guests will gather inside St. George’s Hall for a day-time reception before mingling at a private reception thrown by the groom’s father. Although there’s no word yet on the guest list, the palace promised it will share more details soon.
