Prince Charles Now Shares This Special Connection to His Grandson George

Tags:

Prince Charles has always shared a bond with his grandchildren, but he recently revealed that he did something particularly sweet to commemorate the birth of his first grandson, Prince George, at the family’s Balmoral estate in the Scottish Highlands eight years ago.

Balmoral holds a great deal of significance for the Royal Family, with Queen Elizabeth recently describing it as a home filled with many happy memories for her and the late Prince Philip. Additionally, Prince Charles has visited the property countless times during his life, and he aims to instill that same sense of tradition and excitement in the younger members of the family.

In a new interview with the BBC talking about the environment, the prince detailed how he found a space on the property that he felt could be better repurposed as a garden to honor his grandson, who was born in 2013. “This was a rather empty field that the farm didn’t need anymore,” he explains to the interviewer as they walk through Balmoral’s sprawling grounds. “The great thing was, I managed to plant [the garden] the same year that my grandson was born, the eldest, George. So, I thought I’d call it Prince George’s Wood. I just hope he appreciates it one day.” How thoughtful!

Prince George is currently third in line for the British throne after his grandfather Charles and his father William. He’s followed by his two siblings, Charlotte and Louis.

As for the rest of the interview, it was incredibly wide-ranging, with Charles also opening up about how he is doing his part to promote environmentalism — including through his diet. “I haven’t eaten meat and fish on two days a week and I don’t eat dairy products on one day a week,” he said. “Now I mean, that’s one way to do it. If more [people] did that, you would reduce a lot of the pressure [on the environment.”

Dairy and meat habits aside, Charles’ gesture is a beautiful and heartfelt one, and George will surely treasure the garden as he gets older!
