Why Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie Never Wear Tiaras

Tags:

One perk of being a member of the royal family is the extensive jewelry collection — so why have we never seen princesses Beatrice and Eugenie wear tiaras? As beautiful as we imagine they’d look, we won’t see the royal siblings don a bejeweled headpiece just yet because of an old royal tradition.

Jewelry expert Geoffrey Munn explained tiara etiquette in an interview with Town & Country, saying that “any woman may wear one, but ancient tradition has it that they must be a bride or already married. The tiara has its roots in classical antiquity and was seen as an emblem of the loss of innocence to the crowning of love.”

That means we won’t see Fergie’s daughters in one of the many royal tiaras until they get married. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long, as Princess Eugenie’s wedding is fast approaching. There’s been speculation that the princess will wear the same diamond-encrusted headpiece her mother wore at her own wedding: the York Diamond Tiara. When Fergie married Prince Andrew in 1986, she actually broke royal tradition by walking down the aisle wearing a flower crown, which she removed after the ceremony to reveal a stunning tiara the queen commissioned specifically for Fergie’s wedding.

Princess Eugenie and her fiancé, Jack Brooksbank, are set to tie the knot at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor this October, just months after her cousin, Prince Harry, married Meghan Markle there. So far, 17 other royal couples have exchanged vows at the same venue, which means the chapel has witnessed plenty of royal wedding sparkle.

Queen Elizabeth does not consider her granddaughters senior working members of the royal family, which means they don’t often have to attend events where it would be appropriate to wear a tiara. So the first time Princess Eugenie dons her family’s crown may also be her last. While that fact certainly adds to the pressure of choosing the right one, we’re quite certain that no matter which tiara Princess Eugenie goes with (perhaps the queen will commission a brand-new tiara for her granddaughter), she’s sure to look like an absolute vision.
