Princess Diana Would Have Been a 'Nightmare Grandma,' Says Prince William

Now that Prince William has two young children, the pain of Diana’s death is even more poignant because the beloved princess never got to meet her grandchildren — Prince George and Princess Charlotte. In honor of the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, Princess Diana‘s oldest son has spoken out about what kind of grandmother he believes his mother would have been.

In snippets of footage from the upcoming documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William reveals that “Granny Diana,” as he calls her, would have been a handful.

“She’d be a nightmare grandmother, absolute nightmare,” he joked. “She’d love the children to bits, but she’d be an absolute nightmare. She’d come and go and she’d come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing amount of scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place and — and then leave.”

You can tell by looking at old photos of Diana and her boys just how much she loved them, so we can certainly see her being a total hands-on grandmother with Charlotte and George.

“I want to make as much time and effort with Charlotte and George as I can because I realize that these early years particularly are crucial for children, and having seen, you know, what she did for us.”

So even though Diana never had the chance to meet her grandchildren and her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, her son makes sure that she’s never forgotten.

“It’s hard because obviously Catherine didn’t know her, so she cannot really provide that — that level of detail,” he says. “So, I do [when] regularly putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives, and so it’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”

Had Diana’s life not been tragically cut short, we know she would have been as amazing a grandmother as she was a mother and a human being!
