Before Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank, she had to make a big decision about what royal wedding dress to wear. But she knew one thing for sure: She wanted to show her scoliosis scar on her big day.
The royal underwent major surgery on her back to treat a curvature of the spine at age 12. Since then, Princess Eugenie has been quite open about her condition, publicly paying tribute to the staff who treated her at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital those many years ago.

Today is International Scoliosis Awareness Day and I’m very proud to share my X Rays for the very first time. I also want to honour the incredible staff at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital who work tirelessly to save lives and make people better. They made me better and I am delighted to be their patron of the Redevelopment Appeal. But on her big day, the princess wanted her wedding dress to not only honor the doctors who helped her, but also inspire other folks with scoliosis. In an interview ahead of the wedding with ITV’s This Morning, Princess Eugenie made her intentions to show her scars very clear.
“I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you’ll see on Friday [at the wedding], but it’s a lovely way to honor the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this,” she said. “I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.”
As if that weren’t heartwarming enough, Princess Eugenie also ensured that Julia Carlisle, a 15-year-old dancer with scoliosis who performed on Britain’s Got Talent, would be able to attend the wedding. When asked about Princess Eugenie’s choice to show her scars ahead of the nuptials, Carlisle told ITV it would be a special moment for her.
“Wow, that would mean so much to me,” Carlisle said. “It will bring a tear to my eye.”
We can only imagine what a lovely sight Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress must have been for not only Carlisle, but for countless others with scoliosis among the royal fans tuning into the wedding all around the world.
Congratulations to Princess Eugenie for her wedding — and for beautifully wearing her scars with pride!
