The Queen Found a Slug in Her Salad — And Her Sassy Reaction Was Priceless

Tags:

Though Queen Elizabeth is no doubt given the royal treatment when it comes to her meals, sometimes things slip through the cracks. In one recent instance, the queen’s kitchen staff proved that things can get a little, well, sloppy.

While digging into a nice healthy salad recently, the queen got a little more than she bargained for when she came across a slimy garden slug. This sort of mix-up would normally be a cause for many to flip out and send their salad back right where it came from — but Queen Elizabeth had other ideas.

Instead of raising a formal complaint with her kitchen staff, she reportedly ripped a page from a comment book where she usually passes on her satisfaction, and placed the slug on it. While she may be 92 years old, she’s clearly still got some sass. The Daily Mail reported that alongside the slug, she cheekily wrote, “I found this in the salad — could you eat it?” The queen’s light-hearted reaction may have come as a result of her preference for organic, healthy food; the slug only proves that the greens really are fresh from the garden!

In fact, the queen is so dedicated to eating organic that she now rejects any non-organic foods, according to Darren McGrady, a former royal chef who worked at the palace for 15 years. He told Express, “Try including strawberries on the menu in January and she’ll scrub out the line and say don’t dare send me genetically modified strawberries.”

He added, “She absolutely does eat seasonal.” The chef revealed the queen’s usual day on a plate, which includes a choice of cereals, yogurt, and marmalade on toast for breakfast. It would come as no surprise that she’s partial to a high tea in the afternoon, complete with sandwiches (crusts not included) and cake. And her favorite sweet dish of all? A chocolate biscuit cake, which Elizabeth enjoys a small slice of every single day.

This isn’t the first time the queen has turned her nose up at something — a senior courtier revealed in September that the queen was upset by a scene in Netflix’s The Crown, which didn’t portray Prince Philip in the best light. Up until then, it was widely understood that the queen and other members of the royal family, including Princess Eugenie, enjoyed watching the television show.

Another episode where Prince Charles is depicted as the victim of bullying during his school days at Gordonstoun left Queen Elizabeth “particularly annoyed.” The scene in question showed Philip displaying no sympathy for his troubled son.

“Philip has no sympathy for a plainly upset Charles while he is flying him home from Scotland. That simply did not happen,” the source said. “I can convey that [Queen Elizabeth] was upset by the way Prince Philip is depicted as being a father insensitive to his son’s well-being.” If her sassy response to her chef was anything to go by, we’d love to know what Elizabeth had to say about the show’s producers after watching this particular episode!
