Construction Workers on Roof Pause for the National Anthem

Tags:

Three construction workers put down their tools and put their hands on their hearts when they heard the national anthem — even though they were standing on a roof. Because their patriotic act was caught on camera by proud community members, it’s no surprise that the moment is now going viral.

Roofers Dwayne Harrison, Danny Thyng, and James Scruggs were hard at work on top of a house in Waterville, Maine when they suddenly heard the first notes of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The song, played at a nearby football game, was enough for the men to pause their work and place their hands over their chests. Little did they know, they were being watched by people who were actually at the game.

“When I looked over the fence, I saw them standing and respecting the flag,” said Michelle Lyons Cossar, who spotted the three men from the stands. “I just thought the world could use a little more of that right now.”

So Cossar, along with some other football fans, decided to take a snapshot of the now-viral image and share it on social media to see if she could identify the men so she and others could thank them for their act of patriotism.

Once identified, Harrison, Thyng, and Scruggs said they had no idea that the photos were being taken, but they stopped their work because it was the “right thing to do.”

Harrison said, “It is a respect thing for myself — we did not do this to prove a point.”

That said, members of the Waterville community are hoping that other people will take note of these men and what they did.

“They had no idea anyone even noticed, but our community did,” said resident Shanon Gurski Dixon. “Our little city would love to have them recognized.”
