This Baby Was Born in a Shocking Way–and the Photos Are Jaw-Dropping

Tags:

Photographer Leilani Rogers is known for her stunning images that capture the miracle of childbirth. Recently, while shooting a home birth for a woman having twins, one of the babies came out “en caul,” or born entirely inside its amniotic sac. The photos of this unique moment are a must-see.

“I didn’t realize what I’d captured until after the birth,” Rogers, who is based in Austin, TX, told PopSugar. “There was no time to see the amniotic sac with my own eyes.”

It was the second twin who came out still in its sac, which the midwife then had to break with her hands.

En caul births are pretty rare, occurring in fewer than one in 80,000 births. Typically harmless and most often occurring with premature babies, en caul deliveries have historically been seen as good luck.

Here is the mother cradling both twins just after the birth.

Pretty amazing! We wish them well.
