Embryo Frozen 24 Years Ago Has Finally Been Born a Beautiful Baby
A Tennessee woman has given birth to a baby girl who was frozen as an embryo 24 years ago. The baby’s mom, now 26, was only 18 months old when her future child’s embryo was frozen. Now, everyone is oohing and ahh-ing over the extraordinary — and adorable — miracle baby.
On November 25, Tina and Benjamin Gibson became parents of the little bundle of joy, who now holds the all-time record for the longest-frozen embryo to come to birth. (Wow — not many people can say they broke a record right after they were born!) The Gibsons were able to have their little girl through the National Embryo Donation Center, a faith-based embryo adoption program, which helps couples trying to conceive pair up with potential embryos that will not be used by the genetic parents.
Emma was frozen all the way back in 1992, and was finally thawed in March this year. She was implanted two days later. And today, Emma is a beautiful little darling, weighing in at a healthy 6 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 20 inches long.
“Emma is such a sweet miracle,” her father, Benjamin Gibson, said in a news release. “I think she looks pretty perfect to have been frozen all those years ago.”
Carol Sommerfelt, director of the NEDC’s lab, said the whole experience was “deeply moving.”
She added, “I will always remember what the Gibsons said when presented with a picture of their embryos at the time of transfer: ‘These embryos could have been my best friends,’ as Tina herself was only 25 at the time of transfer.”
Now, the organization is hoping couples who have embryos in long-term storage will consider this as an option for other people who want to become parents.
