Hero Nurse Delivers Woman’s Baby While Shopping at Target

Tags:

Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Caris Lockwood, a labor and delivery nurse, was shopping at Target when another shopper went into labor. Fortunately, Lockwood was the perfect person to help.

Lockwood was shopping with her mom and sister when they noticed Tanya St. Preux. “I saw a very pregnant woman who looked to be in pain,” Lisa Bozeman, Lockwood’s mom, told Fox 5. “She mentioned that she needed to get a few things, then ‘might’ go to the hospital to be checked since her contractions seemed to be getting strong.”

“We urged her friend to go ahead and bring the car to the entrance and we were helping her to the car. Her contractions and pain were increasing as we walked with her to the car,” Bozeman said. “Just when we got outside the store her water broke.”

That’s when Lockwood switched into nurse mode. She asked her sister to run back into the store and ask for sterile gloves and a towel. With the help of a Target employee, Lockwood delivered St. Preux’s baby — a 7-pound-10-ounce boy named Maleek — right by the store entrance.

An ER nurse offered to help, as did a NICU nurse, so St. Preux was in very capable hands. The paramedics who arrived let Lockwood cut the umbilical cord before they took St. Preux to the hospital.

Piedmont Healthcare where Lockwood works posted a photo of the two women smiling after the delivery with a sweet message from St. Preux: “Caris was God-sent and amazing. She was sweet and caring and exceeded everyone’s expectations. She went way over far and beyond.”

Bozeman told Fox 5 that they feel “blessed” to have been able to help. She and her daughters visited St. Preux in the hospital and plan on having “a lifetime of friendship with them.” How sweet!
