She Never Thought She’d Recover After Losing Her Job. Then She Made $225,000 Working from Home
Losing a job is one of life’s downers, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Particularly not if you’re Nina Leonard of Worcestershire, England, who, after her position at work was “made redundant,” took the loss and turned it into a reason for doing something she’d always dreamed of: launching her own brilliant business.
“In my late 20s, I had done a degree in jewelry and silversmithing,” Leonard told the daily Mirror. “I had thought about setting up a business when I first graduated, but it seemed tough and I wanted to get a house and a mortgage. But it was always in the back of my mind.”
Strategic about her plans and her need to provide income for herself while starting a business from the ground up, Leonard got a part-time job as a receptionist to foot the bills, while she “chipped away at being a jewelry designer.” And chip away she did–for three years.
“I started in a teeny tiny box room, on a single desk. I did everything there, the drilling, the polishing,” said Leonard. She began creating personalized necklaces, bracelets, and other trinkets in simple, dainty styles that are customizable with engravings. The idea caught on; last year, she pulled in more than $225,000 in profit, all on her own. She was able to give up the part-time job and may even hire an employee in the near future.
