Flight Attendants Can’t Stand It When You Order Diet Coke While Flying

Tags:

Working as a flight attendant can be rough, and demanding customers are only part of an extensive spectrum of issues that cabin crews have to deal with. The hours can be exhausting, it can be difficult to maintain relationships, and attendants, some would say, are regularly treated like slaves. Needless to say, it’s enough to set anyone in a bad mood. But amidst it all, there is one thing we do as passengers that really gets our cabin crews ticked off — and this annoying drink order is actually pretty surprising.

A flight attendant, who writes under the pseudonym of Jet, revealed on her blog that a request for Diet Coke during drinks service is one of her biggest pet peeves. Why? The CO2 in the beverage makes the drink especially fizzy and difficult to pour in the pressurized airplane cabin.

Jet explained further on her blog: “As you may know, the aircraft cabin is not pressurized to sea level but rather to the equivalent of about seven or eight thousand feet. This means that some passengers might feel a little lightheaded or that alcohol affects them almost twice as much as it would on the ground.”

“It also means soft drinks foam up a lot more when poured out of a can, and the worst culprit for this is Diet Coke,” she continued. “I literally have to sit and wait for the bubbles to fall before I can continue pouring. If all 3 passengers ask for Diet Coke, I’ll often get them started, take another three drink orders, serve those, and then finish the Diet Cokes.”

“Pouring Diet Coke is one of the biggest slow downs in the bar service, and on the shorter flights, those precious seconds count!” she said.
