Adding oil to keep food from sticking to the surface is the first step most of us take before cooking something up in a pan. Even if you’re using non-stick products, you’re probably sautéing with olive oil, coconut oil, or another type of oil you prefer. Plus, whatever you’re cooking can also produce plenty of grease on its own. So, what exactly should we do to get rid of all that gunk?
According to the Kitchen, the best way to dispose of cooking grease is to pour it into a container, wait for it to cool (maybe popping it in the fridge to chill faster), and then toss the solidified oil into the trash. But a new trick gaining popularity on social media makes the process quicker — and without waiting on the oil to cool.

We kind of can’t believe we never thought to put aluminum foil in our sink to catch the hot oil before. The only downside is that you could run through a lot of foil doing this all the time, so you should probably save it for when you’re truly in a rush or just think you won’t remember to properly throw out the grease once it’s cooled down.
And we aren’t here to judge you if you’ve ever walked over to the sink and poured oil down the drain without any foil blocking it. That definitely seems like a logical way to get rid of the gunk… But that grease can quickly re-solidify in the pipe and cause some major damage over time. This can lead to a lot of problems not just with your own plumbing, but also build up and cause blockages throughout the sewage system.
