25 Valentine’s Day Quotes Sweeter Than Candy Hearts

Tags:

Finding the perfect Happy Valentine’s Day quotes to send to people can be challenging. After all, many love quotes have been overused to the point of becoming cliché, and many Valentine’s cards have been overloaded with too much glitter and not enough sentiment. But before you give up altogether on sharing genuine Valentine messages that come from the heart, check out our favorite Valentine’s quotes that we think bring the holiday of love to life.

What does Valentine’s Day mean?

Believe it or not, Valentine’s Day didn’t always celebrate romance. Old legends tell the stories of two separate people both named Valentine, who lived around 300 AD. One was a Christian priest jailed for refusing to worship Roman gods, and the other was an Italian bishop imprisoned for secretly marrying couples. Both Valentines were supposedly beheaded for their crimes.

On a lighter note, we know that ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia, a spring festival associated with fertility, on February 15. It’s believed young men randomly chose names of women to accompany them to celebrate. When Christianity spread throughout Europe, the holiday was moved to February 14 — St. Valentine’s Day — the same day celebrating those Christian martyrs. The custom of choosing a sweetheart for that day spread throughout the Middle Ages in Europe and then later to the American colonies in the 1700s.

We have this odd history to thank for Valentine’s Day becoming a day for sweethearts — a day when you can show your loved ones just how much you care with candy, flowers, or even a Valentine’s Day poem if you’re feeling ambitious. Sharing Valentine’s Day quotes is also a fabulous option: You’ll have your beloved sweetly dreaming of you — and only you —  in no time.

Valentine’s Day Love Quotes and Images You Can Share

It’s worth keeping in mind that our loved ones should feel like everyday is Valentine’s Day. Quotes should just be the icing on the cake! And even if you don’t have a significant other you’re sharing the holiday with this year, remember that you’re not limited to sharing Valentine’s Day wishes with a romantic partner. Thanks to the delightful creation of “Galentine’s Day” in 2010 by the character Leslie Knope in the hilarious sitcom Parks and Recreation, you have the perfect excuse to find some Valentine’s Day quotes for friends, too. Platonic love quotes for your gal pal are just as heartwarming, in our opinion!
