4-Year-Old Girl Gives All the Money in Her Piggy Bank to Police Officer With Cancer

Most four-year-old children save their money for candy or a new toy, but this selfless Colorado girl is using her cash to help officer Kyle Zulauf of the Longmont Police Department, a local police officer who is battling cancer.

The decision to give her money away was an easy one. “It’s the nice thing to do,” Sidney Fahrenbruch told Today.

Zulauf is an Army veteran and a father of three. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer one-and-a-half years ago. Since his diagnosis, the Longmont Police Department has been doing its best to raise the money he needs to pay for an additional surgery.

Fahrenbruch, however, sees her act of kindness as a way of returning a favor. Last summer, Fahrenbruch attended a community event in her neighborhood where she met Longmont police officer David Bonday. It was about a week before she and her family moved into their new home. Nervous of what monsters could be lurking in the closets of the house, Fahrenbruch asked officer Bonday if he could check it out beforehand. And, like any upstanding police officer would do, he agreed to search Fahrenbruch’s new house for monsters.

“She was wearing a little police outfit,” officer Bonday, who has been on the force for 13 years, told ABC News. “She kind of attached to me. It was probably one of the cutest things I’ve ever been involved with as a police officer.”

Sidney’s mom, Megan Fahrenbruch, claims she’s been “obsessed” with the Longmont crew ever since. “She’s brought them Halloween candy, cookies, pie at Thanksgiving. She’s been looking for a police best friend.”

When Sidney recognized Zulauf on a fundraising poster at the police station, she told her mom that she wanted to give him all the money in her piggy bank: around $9 in bills and a half a bag of change.

“It feels good that she’s so giving. She wanted to save the money for a toy but decided someone needed it more than her,” Fahrenbruch told Today.
