Study coauthor Spiros Ladas, MD, says water dilutes and washes stomach acid out of the esophagus.
Worse after exercise?
Turns out 33 percent of us are prone to exercise-induced flare-ups (blame a wonky stomach valve, which can’t keep acids in place once you’re in motion). To heal this heartburn problem, savor a spoonful of raw honey just before a workout. Australian scientists say honey’s natural enzymes coat the esophagus and neutralize acids.
Flare-ups after dinner?
Digestive enzyme production dips after age 50, tripling the risk of delayed stomach emptying and bad heartburn. An easy Rx: Sip one tablespoon of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar (ACV) mixed with water before evening meals, and your heartburn flares could end in 24 hours, UCLA researchers report. Joseph Brasco, MD, co-author of Restoring Your Digestive Health (Buy on Amazon, $15), explains that ACV’s plant acids speed digestion and stomach emptying.
Does it wake you?
Ready for sleep but worry you’ll feel the burn when you lie down? Taking 1,000 mg. of d-limonene (a citrus peel extract) at bedtime eases symptoms in 48 hours and provides complete relief in 14 days. So say Greek scientists, who found the extract encourages gentle muscle contractions in the stomach, speeding food and acids into the intestines and away from your throat.
