It Happened This Week! Do You Remember?
History has a way of repeating itself. Or does it? We’re not sure, which is why we’re walking down memory lane via “This Week In History.” Some pretty amazing things happened this week in history, and though they might not be at the front of your mind, it’s fun to indulge in a bit of nostalgia. After all, if you think back on your life, historic events are often the backdrop for our most important personal memories. High school graduation, marriage, moving, kids — most of us remember exactly what was going on in the world when we did these things.
So while your upcoming week may look pretty standard — paying the bills, walking the dog, working, cleaning house — it’s a week in history that was anything but typical. Here’s a look at what happened in history during the week of April 10 to April 17:
● 21 Jump Street premiered in 1987. It was the first Fox show to ever beat ABC, NBC, or CBS in its time slot.
● The Great Gatsby was published in 1925. It inspired four movies, including the 1974 film with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
● The first McDonald’s east of the Mississippi opened in 1955. A burger cost just 15 cents — half the price of competitors.
● “Dancing Queen” by ABBA topped charts in 1977. It was the only song by the Swedish Europop group to reach number one in the U.S.
● Cher picked up an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Loretta Castorini in the rom-com Moonstruck in 1988.
