If You Purchased Electronics Between 2001 and 2011, You Could Be Sitting on a Gold Mine

In the race to upgrade to bigger and better electronics, your children might have chucked their old phones, laptops, or tablets in a junk drawer somewhere and totally forget about them. And while you’ve grumbled for years and asked them countless times to do something about it, you’ll want to finally applaud your children for their laziness. No, seriously! That’s because those pieces that are cluttering your space are worth some big bucks.

Electronics purchased between Jan. 1, 2001 and May 31, 2011 are all affected because of a class action lawsuit against Hitachi Maxell, LG, and NEC. These three companies make lithium-ion batteries, the same type used to power the machines in question, and they’re being accused of price fixing.

“In other words, individuals and businesses may have paid more for certain products which contained these lithium-ion batteries,” the lawsuit’s website said.

Even better news: it’s not just laptops, phones, and tablets that are affected. Lithium-ion batteries made by these three companies have been found in digital audition player, cameras, camcorders, and cordless power tools. You’re even eligible if you purchased these lithium-ion batteries as replacements for dead ones.

If you haven’t already sprinted to the attic to or unpacked some boxes in your son’s childhood room, there’s more good news. Those who find these items in question stand to gain a portion of the $44.95 million settlement. Yes, $44.95 million.

There’s only two catches: 1. You must have been a resident of the U.S. between Jan. 1, 2001 and May 31, 2011 and 2. “You purchased for yourself or your business (and not for resale) one or more of the products covered by the settlement.”
