Many times, the important, selfless work that police do every day goes unnoticed or recognized by many. That’s why we, along with thousands of others, are cheering the fact that this amazing photo is making the rounds on the internet. It shows something so simple–yet so important to our communities.
In this picture is a Massachusetts State Trooper Luke Bonin, who is sitting on the back of his police cruiser enjoying lunch outside in the sunshine. But it’s what’s happening on the left side of the photo that has people so worked up.
Trooper Bonin, it seems, had just left court when he drove past a woman who appeared to be homeless and was panhandling by the side of a busy road, holding a sign asking passerby for any help at all. Instead of pulling over, the trooper kept driving–straight to a fast food restaurant, where he purchased two takeout lunches. He then made his way back to the woman, who at first was afraid he was there to kick her out of her spot. As Bonin assured her that he wasn’t, he then offered her her choice of the two lunches, and proceeded to eat with her right there on the street.
As the two chatted and got to know each other, unbeknownst to Bonin, an unnamed stranger snapped the picture and posted it to social media. When Bonin later heard about the photo, he was shocked that it was taken and was reluctant to draw any more attention to his simple act. But his fellow state troopers were having none of it; they re-posted the image along with a brief story of the man’s sweet encounter with the stranger in need.
“Trooper Bonin, we know you do not want or expect publicity. We know you didn’t want to be noticed, but you were, and the job is proud of you. We commend you for your selfless act, and for “doing the right thing” for someone less fortunate than most people,” reads the post, which has been shared more than 38,000 times in just a day.
