A couple of weeks ago, I found myself extremely thirsty. Chalk it up to the record-high heat wave we were experiencing in mid-July or my bad habit of slacking on my recommended daily water intake, but either way, it was a wakeup call to change my water drinking habits. That day, I went on the hunt for the best travel water container around.

As I embarked on my search, I decided that I was ready to invest in a high-quality product. I had experienced enough cheap travel mug letdowns to know that it was finally time for me to go all in.

I made a point of looking for a hybrid bottle that would not only keep my water plenty cold in the summer, but my tea piping hot on frigid winter mornings. One thermos in particular kept popping up in my search: the Zojirushi stainless steel Mug (from $23.25, Amazon)

At the top of multiple “best of” lists and personally recommended to me by a handful of friends, this mug’s reputation preceded itself. So, I decided to pick one up and see if it really lived up to the hype.

Naturally, I was skeptical of its claims — remember: I was a woman scorned by past bottles — but it piqued my interest enough to try. Worst case scenario, I’d have to return it, but best case? I’d finally have a reliable drinking bottle.

Once it came, I wasted no time in putting it to the test — literally. I filled it with ice cold water and placed it in my car, in direct sunlight, on a 90+ degree day. Four hours later, I came back. To my complete and utter shock, I found that while the outside of the bottle felt warm to the touch, the water inside was as crisp and cold as when I had first left it. I was officially a believer.

So what’s the secret behind this stainless steel mug’s power? Three words: superior vacuum insulation. The air between its two thin layers of steel has been removed to create a vacuum effect. This lack of air prevents the temperature of your drink from transferring to the outside layer, keeping your beverage hot or cold and putting this mug in a league all its own.

Complete with a safety “no-spill” lock, a wide mouth for quick fills, a sleek and stylish design, and an easy-to-clean mouthpiece, this mug makes it hard to find a negative. It’s also somewhat customizable, with options for a 12 or 16-ounce versions in one of five different color options.

But, if my word isn’t enough to convince you to add it to your collection (fair enough), one scroll through the more than 6,500 five-star reviews this product has racked up on Amazon should do the trick.

One customer called the Zojirushi, “the best travel container in the world,” going on to say, “This product should win an award for the best-designed travel mug on this planet. It DOES NOT LEAK. Ever. It [keeps] beverages hot or cold for months! … Fill it with cold water and it’s great to have icy cold water all day. Best of all? It’s easy to clean, because it completely disassembles for washing and then is a snap to reassemble.”

Another raved over the difference this mug has made in her morning cup of joe, writing, “I like my coffee HOT and this mug works great on keeping my coffee just the way I like it.”

It’s official: The holy grail of travel mugs exists and it’s this stainless steel wonder from Zojirushi.
