How Angela Bassett Looks Stunning and Ageless at 61

Tags:

At 61, Angela Bassett is still giving her male co-stars a run for their money when it comes to staying in amazing shape for her action roles like Black Panther and the TV series 9-1-1. Aside from impressively toned muscles, she seems to have barely aged a day in the past few decades. So how does she do it?

Bassett spilled a few of her skincare secrets while promoting Mission Impossible: Fallout last year. Considering how often her job requires her to wear heavy makeup, she admits to relying on a good aesthetician to maintain her flawless face. She also told the Los Angeles Times that she’s a fan of Dr. Strum products, like their potent eye cream ($140, Nordstrom). It might be a tad (OK, a lot) on the expensive side, but it’s refreshing to hear a celeb who’s completely honest about their beauty routine rather than just saying they drink a lot of water or follow some vague “healthy lifestyle.”

As for her diet and exercise, that’s where things get a little more complicated. Here’s how Bassett broke down her personalized meal plan: “Monday, Tuesday, I may eat carbs, fruit. Tuesday, Wednesday, protein, veggies — veggies every day — no fats those four days, and then the last three days, I flood it with fat,” she explained. “Good fat, though. Maybe coconut oil, salmon, almonds, almond butter, you know, olive oil, that sort of thing.” It might sound like a lot, but there’s no denying it works well for her! Although it does make us wonder if she has to use a spreadsheet to keep everything on track.

When it comes to exercise, she explained how hiring a trainer not only helps sculpt her body, but also makes sure she actually gets any workouts in. “I gotta pay [a trainer] so I will show up, because I don’t want to waste my money,” she says. “I’ve got to be accountable, have someone waiting for me, because I know myself, I will talk myself out of going.” Bassett’s exercise routines vary on what she’s eating that day. For instance, she will focus on weights and muscle building on days she’s eating more protein

If you’re reading all of this and thinking there’s no way you’d ever be able to afford a fancy trainer or organize a meticulous weekly meal plan, don’t worry! We aren’t all cut out to be action stars like Bassett. We can, however, look to her as an inspiration for a few age-defying techniques — but tweaking them to fit with own daily lives. For instance, we can definitely relate to needing a little more accountability when it comes exercise. It’s so easy to put it off, but having someone there for encouragement, like a gym buddy, can make you actually do it.

Plus, it’s always great to celebrate women in Hollywood who refuse to let their age stop them from doing their thing!
