Judge Excuses 54-Year-Old From Jury Duty Because He’s in Love for the First Time
Love conquers all — including jury duty, apparently. That’s what one Irish court found out earlier this week, when one very smitten man was excused from his civic responsibility for the sweetest of reasons.
The 54-year-old man revealed that he had planned a long weekend getaway with his partner that would continue on until Monday. Then, he added that it was the first time he had ever been in love with anyone. As journalist Sarah-Jane Murphy revealed on her Twitter page, the judge had quite an unexpected — and heartwarming — response to the man’s brazen request.
According to Murphy’s tweet, here’s how the exchange played out:
Man: I can’t serve; I’m away for weekend. Judge: We don’t sit at weekends. Man: I’m away till Monday. I’m 54, a bachelor & it’s my 1st time in love. Judge: Then you GO and you GO with my blessing.

It was truly an epic moment ❤️
Murphy added that it was a “truly epic moment” in the courtroom that day, and we can definitely see why. It’s not surprising at all that this dialogue is now going viral on social media, with tons of people heaping praise onto the warm-hearted judge.
Murphy later revealed that the lovestruck man seemed hesitant at first about explaining the real reason why he didn’t want to serve. But by the end of his explanation, he looked more confident than ever.
“The judge broke into a broad smile and the man walked away grinning,” Murphy said. “The woman beside me turned to me and said, ‘Did I imagine that?'”
We certainly couldn’t imagine anything like that playing out in the last courtrooms we served jury duty in! But it just goes to show that you never know when the holiday spirit — or heck, just the spirit of love — will strike someone unexpectedly to make another person’s day. Too sweet!
