For example, Kate looked polished and chic in a classic coat dress by Catherine Walker, a favorite of her designers. But there was more to her outfit than met the eye; the rich blue color — called Prussian blue — was a small tribute to Germany, the country she was visiting on the royal family’s tour of Poland and Germany. Even Princess Charlotte got the memo about wearing blue.

Prussian blue, also called cornflower blue, is “a color that was originated in Berlin at the start of the 18th century,” and it eventually became the color of the Prussian army. German soldiers wore the color to important ceremonies until the beginning of WWI.

According to The Telegraph, the cornflower is especially meaningful to Germany because it is linked to the tale of Queen Louise who hid her children in the cornflowers when Napoleon’s army invaded. The cornflower is now Germany’s national flower.

Today, Prussia no longer exists, and the area where it once existed has been split up between neighboring countries like Germany and Poland.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Kate has used her outfit as a subtle nod to whatever country she was visiting at the time. She recently did this by wearing a Polish-designed dress to a belated birthday reception for Queen Elizabeth. Talk about mixing brains and beauty!
