Audrey Hepburn’s Son Luca Spills His Mom’s Secrets to a Healthy Life

Tags:

Audrey Hepburn is undoubtedly one of the most stylish and charismatic women of “Hollywood’s Golden Age,” and she has the awards to prove it. She was poised, beautiful, lively, and, most importantly, compassionate. We didn’t know her personally, of course, but after reading her son’s interview with Molly Shea on Yahoo, we feel almost as it we did! Though the interview was centered on Luca Dotti’s new cookbook, Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother’s Kitchen ($18, Amazon), he also talked about his mother’s favorite health foods, positive outlook on life, and of course, beauty secrets. So, without further ado, we’d like to share a few of our favorite tips from the intimate and inspirational interview.

Stay hydrated.

Hepburn not only drank a lot of water herself, but also wanted those around her to do it, too. “She insisted so much on everybody drinking a lot of water,” Dotti said. “And that really, today, is so important for the support of everything. She was really about drinking a lot of water and eating a lot of vegetables. It was a matter of how she was brought up.” We’re not going to argue with that one — we could all stand to guzzle more H2O throughout the day, after all.

Eat what’s in season.

You know how you can tell a child something over and over again, but they don’t seem to listen until someone else tells them the exact same thing? Here’s your chance to do the same: We’ve all been told that eating what’s in season is better for us, but it just doesn’t sound right until we’ve heard it from Hepburn.

“She was always looking for seasonal vegetables, what was available at the market,” Dotti said. “At our small market in Switzerland, it was by the seasons. And she had a very healthy vision of her own seasons. She wasn’t afraid at all of getting old. Of course she was complaining about the wrinkles, the white hair, but she really enjoyed her older years. When she was younger, she was often repeating that, for instance, she liked to wear her hair tied in the back, because she thought that was appropriate for her age, but then she’d confide in me that she liked it looser. And her style was related to the food. As she aged, she got rid of all the complicated recipes.”

Appreciate the simple things in life.

Far too often we worry about petty things, such as what we’re wearing, how much money we’re making, or who we’re hanging out with, when we should really be focusing on appreciating the small, simple things in the present moment. In Hepburn’s case, that translated to one of the simplest, least starlet-style dishes you could ever think of.

“[Her favorite meal was] pasta with tomato sauce,” Dotti said. “This was always everywhere, when she was coming home from a trip. Pasta with tomato sauce may sound easy, but to make it well is difficult, and no two results are always the same. Tomato sauce is not only tomatoes. Maybe with a little bit of potato, or carrot.”

Potatoes are very, very important.

Potatoes are basically the root of happiness. You can make mashed potatoes, french fries, potato chips, baked potatoes, potato soup, the list literally goes on and on. And, like most self-respecting potato-lovers, Hepburn knew that potatoes = happiness.

“Sometimes we tend to forget, she was Dutch, so potatoes were a big, big part of her diet. … [And] her father was Irish. Potatoes for her, they were a sustainable thing.”

Hepburn clearly wasn’t just about the glitzy lifestyle of being a Hollywood movie star, she was real and down-to-earth. And, quite frankly, a role model.
