‘Mark the Dog Guy’ Gives Shelter Pups Makeovers to Help Them Get Adopted
We’d like you to meet “Mark the Dog Guy” — a professional groomer who visits the Animal Care Centers of New York (NYC ACC) several times a week to care for shelter pups that have been taken off the streets by giving them a much-needed wash, cut, and dry job — on the house.
It all started when Mark Imhof adopted Cleo — a pit bull mix —through Susie’s Senior Dogs, a Facebook page adoption page for senior pooches.
“I gave her a bath and that just totally changed her look, her attitude, and she felt loved,” Imhof said. “We adopted a second pit bull [named] Fenton from NYC ACC and we both said that it would be great if someone could go to the shelter to help clean up the dogs. So, after my consulting job ended six months from Cleo’s adoption, I went to a four-week, full-time grooming school to learn how to groom.”
Since then, Imhof has groomed more than 550 animals at NYC ACC between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Imhof said he’s also done a little work with Healthy Pets NYC — an organization that helps pet owners in crisis care and keep their pet companions at home.
Now, Imhof is studying to get his master’s degree in taxation from Villanova’s online program, in addition to taking a few classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in hopes of becoming a dog-bed designer.
“I’d like to help the shelter get beds on one end while making designer beds on the other end,” Imhof said.
How sweet and ambitious of him! Not only will his shelter pups be clean-cut and bathed, but they’ll have a brand-new designer dog bed to sleep in, too.
