Before Meghan Markle Was a Royal-to-Be, She Reigned Over the Hallmark Channel

Before she became a princess-to-be, Meghan Markle was known — at least to her TV fans — to be tough and sassy like her Suits character, Rachel Zane. These days, we’ve started to picture Meghan as a softer, more romantic type of woman, much like a character in a Hallmark movie. And now, much to our delight, we’ve discovered that Markle actually has played a character in a Hallmark movie — two of them, in fact.

That’s right, ladies. Back in 2014, Meghan was spreading her Markle Sparkle all over the Hallmark Channel, starring in not one but two Hallmark channel classics: Dater’s Handbook and When Sparks Fly. Sadly, neither film features a prince, but we have real life for that!

In Dater’s Handbook, Meghan’s character is Cassandra Barber, a witty business owner who turns to a popular self-help handbook (hence the title) to help her decide between two men in her life.

In When Sparks Fly, Meghan plays a big city journalist named Amy who travels back to her small hometown to cover a Fourth of July story for the Chicago Post. While she’s there, she feels sparks fly between her and her high school boyfriend — only to find out that he’s getting married to her childhood best friend!

While others may scoff at Meghan’s Hallmark gems, we think she was the perfect fit for these films — and so does she!

“I think Hallmark is such an amazing network to work for,” she said in an interview with the channel after filming Dater’s Handbook.

“It’s really heartwarming and affirming and validating,” she continued. “Especially in this day and age, it’s so nice for families to be able to all watch programming together. With stories like this, it keeps it really light and easy. And it makes everybody feel good. At the end of a long day, that’s what I want to watch!”

Even though Meghan has stepped away from showbiz to start her new life as a member of the royal family, we’re still holding on to hope that she’ll make at least a quick cameo appearance in another Hallmark movie someday. She could even play a princess!
