Talk about a shock! Mom Emma Power was amazed to learn she was pregnant--with twins!--even though she was on the pill. Then, a few years later, a second pregnancy test revealed another crazy twist to her story.
Power was 19 and in college when she first found out she was pregnant. She and her boyfriend John, who would later become her husband, were astonished.
‘When I went for my scan...the sonographer told me that she could see two heartbeats. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing."
She ended up having twin boys, Connor and Kyle, and today they're 10 years old. Because the pill hadn't worked for her that time, she decided to try another method of birth control.
This time she opted for a hormonal implant because they are generally believed to be more effective. The device was inserted in her arm, and it was intended to release a low dose of hormones over a period of years.
Against the odds, Power and her husband learned they were expecting twins--again! According to the National Health Service (NHS), the U.K.'s healthcare system, the chances of this happening were one in three billion.
"I’d had some bleeding, so I wasn’t sure whether the sonographer was going to find a heartbeat at all," she told DailyMail.co.uk
Today, Ruby and Jessica, the second set of twins, are 4 years old.
Doctor's cited Power's "super fertility" as the reason for her pregnancy. They told her that even if she continued with birth control, it was possible that she would get pregnant a third time, so she had doctors perform a tubal ligation. Despite that, medical professionals recommended her husband have a vasectomy because there was a chance that Power's body would reverse the tubal ligation.
"I do feel very lucky to have my two sets of twins--even if they...were a complete surprise."
What an amazing birth story!
