Any dog owner knows choosing a name for your four-legged best friend can be challenging. After all, no two dogs are exactly alike, so you want to be sure that your pooch has a name that fits its unique personality. And, as a new report suggests, many of us also want to make sure our dogs' names reflect that they are truly a member of the family.
In fact, a whopping 94 percent of Americans consider their pup part of the family, according to a new report released by Rover, an online network for pet sitters and dog walkers. Judging by the names people often give their pets, we'd say it definitely shows. The top 10 names for both male and female dogs are reminiscent of names we usually give our human family members. For example, the top male dog name is Max, and the top female name is Bella. Sounds like names we wouldn't mind giving our own kids!
“This year, more than ever, we’re seeing pet ownership redefining the modern definition of family and home life. Many of today’s dog owners call themselves ‘pet parents,’ a huge signal of the familial relationship modern pet owners have developed with their dogs,” said Brandie Gonzales, pet lifestyle expert for Rover. “In that same vein, pet parents have become more thoughtful about the dog naming process, as is typical for a parental figure. They use it as an opportunity to express something about themselves and the way they feel about their dog.”
To any 'pet parent' out there, this makes perfect sense. Now, without further ado, here are the most popular dog names of 2017 (plus some puptastic pics of name representatives from WeRateDogs, one of our favorite things ever). See if your pup's name is on the list!
