UPDATE (5/19) -- Our hearts swelled when we learned that Prince William promised his mom Princess Diana that he'd get her back her title after her divorce from Prince Charles, and now more news about Princess Diana's special bond with her sons are sending us straight for the tissue box.
PopSugar reveals that William, after noticing how down his mother was one day, brought her a box of chocolates, saying, "Mommy, I think you've been hurt. These are to make you smile again." How sweet!
At the time, William was only 12 years old, but it's amazing to see his kind heart is something that's stayed with him through adulthood. We know Diana must be proud!
(5/15/17) -- It's no secret that Princess Diana and Prince Charles had a troubled marriage, but little do most people know that Prince William was there to lovingly comfort his mom in the wake of all the chaos.
When the royal divorce occurred in 1996, Diana was forced to give up the title of "Her Royal Highness" per Prince Charles' request (although the Queen was in favor of lettering her keep the title). While the newly named Diana, Princess of Wales mourned the loss of her honorific—which now painfully separated her from the rest of her family—a 14-year-old Prince William was there to soften the blow. After the new protocol forced a humiliated Diana to curtsy to her children, Prince William offered his mom the sweetest consolation: "Don't worry, Mummy, I will give [the title] back to you one day when I am king."
How beautiful! Give us a moment while we grab the tissues.
The adorable sentiment proves just another reason to admire the beloved Duke of Cambridge. At the time, Prince William was a student at Eton College, and he hadn't even begun his royal duties or military service yet. But even from a young age, he was wise beyond his years: He understood his future power as second in line to the throne and used it for the greater good.
Sadly, Diana died just one year after William made his heartfelt vow. Since her death, both Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry, have chosen to speak about the tragic impact of her passing. Earlier this month, Prince Harry opened up about his painful struggle with mental health issues that were caused by his mother's death.
Still, the brothers try to find a silver lining to their loss. They continue to encourage open dialogue about mental health through the various charities they support—efforts we're sure would have made Princess Diana proud.
